Online Teaching and Learning

Trexler Library is eager to continue to support you and your students as you prepare for summer courses online. For online teaching in spring term, we added access to additional online resources made freely and temporarily available by publishers. We also followed temporary emergency practices in our application of fair use for reserves.

For summer, services will be as follows:

  • Funds are available to purchase new online resources for summer courses. Requests should be submitted directly to the library as soon as possible because we are working within the constraints of fiscal year end and remaining funds. (+info)
    • Feature & drama film reserves practices will roll back to pre-COVID-19
      practices. (+info
    • Resources with COVID-19 temporary access are being removed as they expire; specific dates were indicated with resource information in Encompass and/or Databases A-Z. (+info)
  • Teaching and learning librarian services continue online. (+info)
  • Interlibrary loan service and in-library materials access remains limited. (+info)
  • Student services information has been updated. (+info)

Collection Resources Online

  • Currently available: Over 1.3 million eBooks, eJournals, eVideos, eMusic, articles, databases and more are immediately findable and accessible through Encompass and Databases A-Z. In Encompass, you can narrow search results to “e” resources, by using the Format filters on the search results screen (examples).
  • Streaming videos: Through Alexander Street, the library provides unlimited subscription access to over 69,000 videos across most of our disciplines. Content types range widely and include instructional videos, fiction, documentaries, news and event recordings, and more. Search by subject, publisher, person, content type, language, and more. Streaming access to videos on other platforms is purchased for a limited term on a title-by-title basis. Submit requests here and include course number.
  • Textbooks: As a general policy the library does not purchase textbooks, however we have acquired some as part of ebook package purchases. These are cataloged and findable in Encompass along with catalogued Open Access textbooks. This subject guide provides sources for Open Educational Resources
  • Linking to library resources from within Canvas: View this short video for guidance. As always, when using online library resources in your course, it is best to link to the document or resource rather than downloading. This assures compliance with license terms and communicates use of these resources to the library’s collection development team. For assistance with linking, please email trexlerreserves@muhlenberg.edu or libraryresources@muhlenberg.edu

Copyright and Canvas and Reserves

Due to the pandemic, library staff have, in line with many other institutions of higher education, relied heavily on fair use for e-reserves during the online-only teaching portion of the spring term. With few if any exceptions, we have converted DVDs in their entirety to streaming in Canvas. This has been the case for feature films as well as for documentaries. We did this as an emergency measure; we were rushed, not having the time to explore our options.

For the summer terms and fall semester we will return to standard practices. We request 5 to 7 days advance notice to allow staff time to provide you with streaming access that meets legal requirements. This involves:

  1. Transcoding and loading documentaries in their entirety (per the TEACH Act, per our College attorney) and/or exploring other means of access; or
  2. Exploring and purchasing streaming options for feature/dramatic films (or transcoding up to 25 percent without permission, per the TEACH Act, per our College attorney) or exploring other means of access.

To submit a reserves request, please use the online course reserves request form

For e-reserves questions, contact Amanda Riegel (amandariegel@muhlenberg.edu).

For copyright questions, contact Kelly Cannon (kellycannon@muhlenberg.edu).

Teaching and Learning Consultation

Trexler Library’s librarians will continue to be available for consultations about classes, assignments, resources, and student support. They can be reached by email or phone. Contact information can be found here.

Purchase Requests

Purchase requests for summer course materials should include the course number and be emailed directly to librarian liaisons or submitted through the online Suggest a Purchase form. We are not using the department allocation approval process for summer term purchases.

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

  • Currently only article and chapter requests are being filled through interlibrary loan from other libraries.
  • If you have an Interlibrary Loan book coming due, please email illd@muhlenberg.edu to request renewal or return it using the library Book Drop. After we and other libraries are able to return to working in the library, we expect we can restart lending and borrowing books from other libraries.
  • Delivery of Trexler Library’s print resources to faculty at home is available. Submit a request by using the “Request Item through Interlibrary Loan” button on the Encompass record or using the appropriate ILL form. If the request is for an article or chapter, we will email a PDF. To have a book delivered, include a mailing address in the Notes field.  Because we have limited access to the library, requests are processed weekly.

Students Services (please help us get the word out)

  • The library has many online resources accessible through the library website.

  • Trexler Library’s librarians will continue to be available for student reference and research consultations by email, phone, and Zoom. Please encourage your students to reach out for assistance with their projects. Contact information and guides to resources can be found here.

  • We have adjusted all due dates for Trexler Library materials to September 4th. No fines will be assessed for return after September 4th. Questions should be directed to circulationdesk@muhlenberg.edu or 484-664-3500. Please note: Interlibrary Loan due dates are different. If you currently have an Interlibrary Loan book you should check the due date; you must initiate this renewal. Send an email request to illd@muhlenberg.edu.
